POST-RACE WELLNESS CARE:
SUSTAINING PEAK PERFORMANCE

Table of Contents

Recovery after a marathon is just as important as the prior training process. From a professional perspective, Specialist Doctor II Doan Thi Kim Oanh, Head of the Outpatient – Emergency Department, Sante Hospital shares and guides health recovery solutions for runners after each race:

1. Biological mechanism & Early warning signs

After completing a long race, our body requires time to recover. Without proper recovery, you may experience serious issues such as injury, fatigue, and reduced training motivation. Therefore, the post-race recovery phase demands greater attention. Proper musculoskeletal care and rehabilitation will minimize injuries and promote a return to normal mobility and daily activities.

2. Diagnostic methods & specialized treatment protocols

1. Rehydration and nutritional support

During running, the body loses water and electrolytes through sweat. Post-race rehydration is a top priority. Runners should drink adequate water while supplementing with electrolyte-containing beverages to support muscle recovery and minimize the risk of muscle stiffness. Nutritional supplementation rich in protein and carbohydrates helps the body repair damaged muscle tissues and replenish energy.

2. Perform gentle stretching exercises

Post-run, muscles are typically very tight and at risk of inflammation. Gentle stretching exercises or using a foam roller can help alleviate soreness, enhance blood circulation, and prevent injuries for subsequent runs. High-intensity training should be avoided for at least 48 hours after completing a marathon to allow the body adequate recovery time.

3. Cold compress

Cold compress is an effective solution to relieve musculoskeletal pain. Use an ice pack and apply it to the painful area, such as the knee joint, ankle joint, and foot joint. Runners can apply the RICE method recommended by the US Online Medical Manuals (MSD Manuals): Rest – Rest, Ice – Cold compress, Compression – Compression bandage, Elevation – Elevate the injured area. You should not apply ice directly to the skin, but rather line or wrap it in a soft towel, with the application time not exceeding 20 minutes/time.

4. Ensure adequate, restorative sleep and monitor for signs of persistent pain or injury

Sleep plays an essential role in cellular regeneration and strength recovery. After a race, it is recommended to get adequate sleep while engaging in activities that reduce mental stress, such as meditation, reading, or chatting with friends.
Additionally, runners must pay close attention to symptoms such as sharp pain, swelling, or unusual discomfort, as these may indicate microtrauma. Common injuries include Achilles tendinitis, patellofemoral pain syndrome, and myositis or muscle tears. Upon noticing any abnormal signs, runners should present to a medical facility for timely clinical evaluation and treatment.

5. Post-Race Medical Evaluation

Runners must undergo medical evaluations to ensure that their cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and other clinical parameters remain stable after enduring high-intensity strain from a race. This assessment facilitates the early detection and prevention of medical conditions that may arise during prolonged training and competition.
Post-race health care not only helps runners recover, but also ensures sustainable training and prevents future injuries.
